Alice (1988) is a Czechoslovakian movie adaptation of Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland. An odd mixture of live action and stop motion, this movie is fascinating, whimsical and stunning. The intro sequence it offers is interesting, but I wanted to see how I could add the sense of whimsy and handmade qualities that are carried through the movie.
THEMES AND METAPHORS
The movie follows the general plot of the book, but takes many liberties on how it is presented. Working through a variety of mediums using household objects.
Since the movie is so ecclectic in nature and mediums, I wanted to take an element that was not as fully fleshed out to play around with. In this case, I chose shadow puppets.
Shadow puppets were featured for a short amount of time in the film, but I thought it was a fantastic overall metaphor in showing how the events take place in a child’s bored mind.
MOODBOARD
With that, I contructed a moodboard of inspiration, focusing on paper cut-outs, whimisical typography and a vintange feel.
DEVELOPMENT
STORYBOARD
Visual direction in mind, I drew a rough story board. I wanted to focus on the relationship between the type and image, finding ways to make it engaging, not just plastered on to the screen.
The way this manifested is by representing a set of key characters from the movie without revealing too much of how they play out in the movie.
ASSETS
Using Procreate on my iPad, I illustrated each of the characters in a paper cut-out, shadow puppet style.
RENDERED STORYBOARD
With the assests defined, I put them together into a refined storyboard to see how well they work in context of the project and how they interact with each other.
At this stage, I also chose the typeface “Magnolia MVB”. A quirky serif font that feels both child-like with a touch of creepy that perfectly went with the themes of the film.
AFTER EFFECTS
While working on the animation, I created other assets like a background, textures and a more engaging title card at the end. These elements really brought together the sequence and made it feel like it could fit right in to the movie as well as the era it was created in.
