The Brief
Create a 2-3 minute video using these randomly assigned prompts:
1. Goblin
2. Knife
3. "Toto, I've got a feeling we aren't in Kansas anymore"
Our Approach
We started off by taking the time to create 2 ideas each from our assigned prompts. After some discussion, we settled on a knife safety "PSA" that takes place at a goblin academy. We began to spit out humourous and ridiculous knife safety tips, creating mini storyboards for ideas to help us visualize it.
We picked our 3 strongest rules and created a storyboard/shot list of the entire video, detailing what would be happening in each scene including camera movement, sounds and voice overs.
Our biggest concern for this project was consistency, all of us are artists with distinct styles and we were worried that this may lead to a very inconsistent look, especially since we were animating each scene separately. Our solution to this was to create a character reference sheet and agree on a color palette early on.
We then split off to draw and animate our assigned scenes, keeping each other updated and asking for help when needed. Here are some scenes I animated.
Overall, the project was challenging but extremely rewarding. Within 6 weeks, I was able to learn animation basics and AfterEffects to create a great and entertaining video. I am so grateful to have worked with my teammates, who are so talented and were very motivated during the process. This project helped awaken an interest in motion and animation.
